Street vendors clash with police in Ramses Square

Several street vendors on Sunday in Cairo's Ramsis Square clashed with policemen who were trying to clear them out.

According to preliminary investigations, when street vendors spread their products out on the road, the police — helped by army forces and military police — kept them off the road.

Refusing to budge, the vendors resisted and pelted the police with stones. The police then used force to disperse them.

Security forces arrested 20 of the vendors, confiscated their products and referred them to the prosecution for investigation.

Saying they contribute to traffic congestion, Cairo Governor Abdel Azeem Wazir said in mid-March that he intends to clear Ramses Square of vendors.
