Sufi protest to demand constitution before elections

Reformist Sufi leaders have called for a million-strong demonstration in Tahrir Square and Sayeda Zeinab Square on Tuesday to demand that the constitution be written before the parliamentary elections are held.

“We intend to activate the role of the Sufis in the community,” said their spokesman, Mohamed Abdel Khaleq al-Shabrawy. “And we want to warn against the rise of radical Islamists in politics.”

Shabrawy confirmed that various political forces and human rights organizations had agreed to take part in the demonstration.

“We have also invited the presidential candidates and the National Association for Change to join us against the extremists who threaten the security, integrity and stability of society,” he added.

“By calling for elections first, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafi movement are seeking to disrupt political life in Egypt,” he said.

He also said the remnants of the former regime must all be isolated before any elections are held.
