Supreme Judicial Council: No decision yet on return of ex-prosecutor general

The Supreme Judicial Council is yet to make a final decision over whether to reinstate former prosecutor general, Abdel Meguid Mahmoud, according to its secretary general, Mohamed Eid Mahgoub.

Mahgoub added that the council will hold a meeting on Thursday morning to assess how to implement the court ruling which invalidated the appointment of Talaat Abdallah as public prosecutor.

In statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm he added that the ruling has not yet been submitted to the council.

Meanwhile, a senior judicial source at the council said Abdallah no longer has a right to attend the council's sessions and emphasized that the Cassation Court ruling invalidating his appointment is final and unchallengeable.

The source added that it is certain that Abdallah is no longer in his post and the coming meeting for the council will determine how to implement the ruling.

"The exact phrasing of the ruling will be decisive over whether Mahmoud will be returned to his post," the source said.

The source however said it is unlikely for Mahmoud to return to his position under the current constitution which states that a prosecutor general's term is four years, which Mahmoud has already served.
