Beit al-Sanary is set to showcase the documentary film “Thalassemia” on Thursday 25 December 2014 at 6 pm.
The storyline of the film not only addresses the scientific aspect of the blood disorder Thalassemia and its complications, but also recounts the story of some people infected with the disease and their ongoing attempts to beat it through deteriorating circumstances.
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder characterized by defective production of hemoglobin, the iron-rich protein found in red blood cells that in charge of delivering oxygen to the whole body. The disorder destroys red blood cells, which leads to anemia with varying levels of severity. The prohibitively expensive cost of treatment poses an enormous burden particularly on the shoulders of the poor.
The film also sheds light on the prevention measures that should be implemented to contain the spread of the disease. Egypt suffers from high prevalence of the disease estimated at about 9 percent which is one of the highest rates worldwide.
The film screening, which is open for public, will be held in the presence of the crew followed by a discussion with the film critic Nahed Salah.
“Thalassemia” is the second film directed by Mohamed Khaled, who also worked as scriptwriter for a number of short films in recent years.
