UK hands over new info on smuggled funds

The British government has pledged to cooperate and to use its information and facilities for Egypt's request for legal and judicial assistance in returning funds smuggled abroad by members of Hosni Mubarak’s regime, according to Public Prosecution spokesperson Mostafa Dowidar.

Dowidar said Saturday that the pledge came in an official letter sent from the British ambassador to Egypt and was handed over after extensive meetings between a British delegation and a team of Egyptian prosecutors over three days. The letter was handed to Prosecutor General Talaat Abdallah.

The spokesperson added that during the meetings, the British delegation presented information on funds in property in the UK owned by former regime figures, as well as their relationship to companies operating within Egypt and other countries.

The information could help start new investigations into cases of corruption and money laundering by members of the former regime and also strengthen current investigations.
