The Islamist-leaning Wasat Party announced Monday its decision to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections slated to begin in April. The party’s supreme body made the decision during a meeting Sunday evening, a statement said Monday.
The party’s political bureau is choosing the individual and joint list candidates with other moderate forces, the statement added.
The elections are due to start in April and take place over four stages. Various opposition groups have said they would boycott the legislative elections, which may lead to a new parliament dominated again by Islamist political forces.
The Salafi Nour Party announced earlier today its decision to participate in the House of Representatives elections in April, but added that the government must ensure that the elections are free and fair.
Nader Bakkar, official spokesperson for the party, had said earlier that his party had reservations regarding the date of the election, adding that it should have been set consensually with the diverse political powers.
The Wasat party also said it would take part with other political forces in the national dialogue session on Tuesday to discuss guarantees for the integrity of the elections.
The recently-formed Salafi Watan Party said Monday that President Morsy’s national dialogue is a good means of communication with the Egyptian people.
“We hope the dialogue produces tangible actions that citizens can feel,” said Media Committee Chairman Mohamed Nour.
