The South Giza Prosecution on Sunday summoned Jama'a Islamiya leaders Assem Abdel Maged and Tarek al-Zomor for questioning regarding their roles in violence between supporters and opponents of toppled president Mohamed Morsy close to Cairo University.
At least 21 people were killed in those clashes at Bein al-Sarayat late Tuesday.
Morsy’s Islamist supporters have been staging sit-ins and demonstrations in defense of his legitimacy as Egypt’s first freely-elected president in reply to mass protests held last week in demand of early elections.
Abdel Maged has been heavily criticized for threats he made to Morsy’s political opponents ahead of the 30 June demonstrations that toppled the president.
The South Giza Prosecution has also detained popular Salafi preacher Hazem Salah Abu Ismail in relation to the same incident at Bein al-Sarayat.
