The Ministry of Youth and Sports decided to launch an urgent and official investigation to determine the causes of death of Youssef Mohamed, a player from Al Zohour Sporting Club, who passed away while participating in the Republic Championship.
The Ministry’s statement read as follows: “In the framework of the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ close follow-up of the unfortunate incident regarding the death of the young swimmer, Youssef Mohamed, and based on initial information gathered about the incident, and in commitment to ensuring complete transparency in the investigations, Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhy, decided to refer the incident to the Public Prosecution Office to initiate an investigation in light of reviewing the Ministry’s approved medical code.”
The statement indicated that the ministry requested the Egyptian Swimming Federation to prepare a comprehensive and urgent report containing all details related to the incident.
Furthermore, the minister ordered the formation of a committee comprising specialists from the Legal Affairs, Supreme Medical Committee, Sports Performance, and Internal Audit departments to review the medical, technical, and administrative procedures, ensure the application of the medical code for sports practice and competitions in clubs and youth centers, and review the procedures taken by Al Zohour Club officials.
The statement continued: “The Minister is following the repercussions of this painful incident, which has sparked a state of sadness across Egyptian sports circles, with great sadness and regret. He affirmed that the Ministry will not be complacent in taking any measures necessary to preserve the rights of athletes and ensure full adherence to safety standards within clubs and youth centers. His Excellency stressed that the safety of athletes is at the forefront of the state’s priorities, and the Ministry is continuously working to monitor the implementation of medical and technical procedures regulating sports activities to guarantee a safe environment for all athletes.”
“The Minister of Youth and Sports extends his sincere condolences to the family of the late swimmer, praying to God Almighty to grant him boundless mercy and grant his family and relatives patience and solace,” it concluded.
