CAIRO, Feb 6 (MENA) – Bulgarian Ambassador to Egypt Deyan Angelov Katratchev said that Egypt and Bulgaria are celebrating 100 years of official diplomatic relations, highlighting the growth of a strong and expanding partnership in investment and trade.
Speaking to local media, Ambassador Katratchev stressed that bilateral ties extend far beyond the last century, with historical interactions dating back to the Byzantine and Mamluk eras.
He noted that a significant Bulgarian community settled in Egypt after 1854, particularly in Alexandria, contributing actively to commercial and economic life for more than 90 years.
The ambassador highlighted the recent acceleration in cooperation, noting multiple high-level visits since 2018, including Bulgarian prime minister and presidential visits, participation in the Climate Summit, and the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
He stressed that these exchanges have strengthened economic and political ties.
Ambassador Katratchev added that Egypt’s strategic location and recent infrastructure developments have encouraged Bulgarian investment in sectors such as manufacturing, technology, and food industries, with plans underway for a Bulgarian automotive project in Egypt.
On trade, he said Bulgaria exports wheat to Egypt, while Egypt supplies potatoes and citrus fruits, with further cooperation in the petrochemical sector.
Bilateral trade and investment reached approximately $1.8 billion in 2024, he further noted.
Looking ahead, the ambassador said the centennial celebrations in 2026 are expected to boost investment, tourism, and direct flights between Cairo and Sofia, further strengthening Egypt-Bulgaria relations. (MENA)
