Egypt military accuses foreign elements of instigations

Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) on Sunday accused "foreign elements" of attempting to sow sedition toward the military through accusations against some council members.

In a message on its Facebook page, the SCAF accused the elements of making untrue statements and infiltrating protests with outlaws to provoke the armed forces, thus driving them into confrontations with civilians.

"The goal of such elements is to destabilize the military, which is the linchpin of Egypt's security," the SCAF said.

The SCAF frequently warns of attempts to create divisions between the military and civilians.

Egypt's military has been credited with supporting the 25 January revolution that forced former President Hosni Mubarak to resign in February. But it has also been criticized for reacting with force to a number of demonstrations.

The Facebook message also denied reports by "websites that work eagerly against the country's interests," assuring that the opportunity is available for all patriotic groups to express their opinions freely.

It concluded by urging citizens to be cautious of “destructive elements who seek to weaken the nation to achieve their malicious goals."
