Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr on Wednesday called Prince Saud al-Faisal, his Saudi counterpart, and discussed the issue of Ahmed al-Gizawy, the Egyptian lawyer and human rights activist who is detained in Saudi Arabia on charges of entering the country carrying narcotic tablets, as the Saudi authorities claim.
Faisal agreed to Amr’s request that the authorities allow the Egyptian consul in Jeddah to visit Gizawy and extend him their services at the earliest possible opportunity.
The Saudi director of the Drug Enforcement Department has confirmed to the consul that Gizawy is well treated.
The Egyptian embassy in Riyadh is contacting the Saudi foreign and interior ministries to make sure Gizawy is granted his full legal rights.
The consul told Gizawy’s wife that he asked the authorities to allow her to visit him as soon as possible, and promised to extend all services she and her husband need.
