Egyptian satellite to be manufactured, launched in two years: official

The first locally-producted Egyptian satellite will be manufactured and launched within two years, Ayman Mahmoud, a board member of the Egyptian Space Agency, said, adding that the step “represents a great challenge.”

Mahmoud told “Al-Mowagaha” (The Confrontation) program: “Egypt has huge industrial capabilities that enable it to create a 100 percent Egyptian satellite,” stressing that “Egypt has high-level scientists and engineers.”

“We are trying to organize efforts so that we have the capabilities and expertise to develop space systems in Egypt,” he continued.

The satellite will be used in the country’s initiative “Hayah Karima” (A Decent Life) in the development of villages, as it will provide aerial images, he said.

The initiative will be able to not only capture the images, but analyze them to better work toward Egypt’s sustainable development goals.

Space applications provide all the necessary information for security, sustainable development goals, and data for border guards, Mahmoud added.

There is now an unprecedented political awareness of space, which will help achieve its long-term goals, he said.
