Egypt’s parliament holds its first session after poll

The People’s Assembly on Monday is holding it first session after parliamentary elections, described by rights reports as “rigged,” were conducted last month.

Eldest member Sayyed Rostom will preside over the session with the assistance of the two youngest members until the parliamentary speaker and his two deputies are elected during the same session.

The parliament is convening despite court rulings nullifying elections and other rights reports describing the first and second rounds of elections as flawed.

The Administrative Court invalidated the two rounds of poll, besides issuing more than 1000 decrees ordering that the announcement of results be halted.

The court referred to the fact that the High Elections Commission had changed parliament’s candidacy conditions.
