Gas pipeline bombed for 8th time this year, not badly damaged

Masked gunmen targeted the Egyptian pipeline delivering natural gas to Israel and Jordan for the eighth time this year on Friday morning, MENA reported Friday.

No one was injured in the attack and the pipeline has not been critically damaged, the report added.

The Sinai-based pipeline has been continuously attacked as authorities have struggled to maintain security in the peninsula, which has been deficient since the overthrow of former President Hosni Mubarak in February.

Egypt's 20-year gas deal with Israel, signed during the Mubarak era, is unpopular with many Egyptians.

The bombing targeted the pipeline in Beni Mazar village, 60km west of the city of Arish.

The attempt failed, though, and did not start a fire as gas flow is currently suspended due to ongoing reconstruction work since the last bombing on 10 November, MENA said.

Eyewitnesses said a group of masked gunmen in a white SUV placed explosives on the pipeline and then fled.

The bombing left only a small gash in the pipeline, as it has only been test-pumping gas since the last attack, said the Egyptian Natural Gas Company (GASCO), which operates the pipeline.

GASCO sources said the pipeline which was targeted pumps gas to the west of Arish and the heavy industrial zone in central Sinai.

Security forces are combing the area in cooperation with Sinai Bedouins to track down the perpetrators, GASCO sources added.
