Government seeks to house 3 million people in new Sinai city

The Egyptian government is planning to house some 3 million citizens in a new city to be built in Sinai.

During his inspection of the Salam Canal project in Sinai on Thursday, Irrigation Minister Hisham Qandil said the government is planning to build the city in Sinai as part of a larger initiative to boost the population of the area. He said that the government also plans to cultivate 400,000 acres in Sinai for the project.

“Bureaucracy and red tape have only allowed us to cultivate 66,000 acres so far,” he said. “Now we are under public pressure to reduce the food gap and develop Sinai and other areas.”
