Cairo’s provincial authority demolished a seven-story hospital belonging to the Islamic Medical Association on Sunday, claiming that the hospital lacked a license. The Islamic Medical Association is an affiliate of the Muslim Brotherhood.
The association has filed an appeal against the order that was issued by the Nasr City local council last month. A hearing is scheduled for next Thursday.
Doctors said the hospital, which was built on 2000 square meters and cost LE40 million, contained radioactive equipment that could be hazardous if destroyed in the demolition.
"We have 23 hospitals," said association board member Dr. Said el-Anwar. "It is a pity to demolish this one over some legal dispute." El-Anwar also said that the association had received a preliminary license for the hospital.
