Egypt's military on Tuesday began handing over the offices of the new National Security Agency, starting with the Nasr City headquarters, a security source said.
The new security apparatus will replace the former State Security Investigations Service (SSIS), dissolved by Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy in mid-March.
"The rest of the offices will be handed over during the coming period in order for the apparatus to start operations nationwide by May," the source noted.
In March, protesters broke into the SSIS headquarters and seized a number of its documents, later giving them to the Armed Forces. Other documents had been shredded by former officers.
Essawy tasked the new security agency with protecting the country from terrorist threats and espionage without interfering in citizen's personal lives and political activities.
The security source said that the National Security Authority will be also responsible for Egypt's internal security and countering organized cross-border crimes.
