Representatives of 17 political parties, movements and former presidential campaigns have called for the removal of North Sinai Governor Abdul-Wahab Mabrouk.
The representatives met and signed a statement Thursday at the Lawyers Syndicate in Arish, North Sinai, where they say the situation is going “from bad to worse.”
Attendees discussed the lack of security and services in the governorate, as well as the deterioration of infrastructure and the corruption rampant in most of the executive departments.
The statement said they had tried to coordinate with executive authority officials in recent months to provide solutions for the issues facing Sinai residents, but their attempts were rejected and deliberately ignored in order to thwart the progress of the revolution and to disrupt President Mohamed Morsy’s 100-day plan.
The statement was signed by the liberal Wafd Party, the Salafi-oriented Nour Party, the Freedom and Justice Party, the centrist Wasat Party, the April 6 Youth Movement and the National Association for Change, and the presidential campaigns for both Hazem Salah Abu Ismail and Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh. A number of Sinai-based youth and revolutionary movements also took part.
Participants pledged to achieve their demands by peaceful and legitimate means.
Since the 25 January revolution and the subsequent police withdrawal from the streets, there have been many reports of foreign tourists being kidnapped in Sinai, as well as gunmen storming companies’ offices.
Residents have demonstrated in several cities, demanding that the police return to do their jobs and protect citizens.
