Protests erupt against poor medical coverage

Alexandria — Scores of medical insurance subscribers plan to stage protests in front of the Alexandria First Instance Court Wednesday to demand improved medical services from the public health insurance scheme.

Relatives of protesters had been the victims of incorrect diagnoses and treatment at public hospitals. Some have filed lawsuits against doctors at public hospitals, accusing them of having been responsible for the death of several patients.

Lawyer Mohamed Abdel Rahman said hemophilia patients do not receive proper treatment at state hospitals. "Many of them have contracted virus C due to incorrect treatment," he said.

Protesters called on President Hosni Mubarak to prosecute the hospital officials responsible.

"I will keep protesting until I see some improvement," said Mohamed Ibrahim, whose son lost his life at a public hospital.
