An Egyptian rights organization on Tuesday urged the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to release protesters arrested during a protest outside the Israeli Embassy on Nakba Day, or the anniversary of Israel’s creation.
Clashes on Sunday between protesters and security forces in Giza led to the injury of 353 people and the arrest of 180 others, who were referred to military prosecution.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights said it worried about security forces’ use of excessive force. Security forces used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters, who were said to have attempted to break into the Israeli Embassy.
Hafez Abu Seada, the head of the organization, called for dropping charges brought against the protesters and urged their release.
Seada emphasized the need to respect the right to peaceful protests and freedom of expression and called for abandoning the policy of suppression adopted by the ousted regime.
Protesters on Sunday marched through Tahrir Square to the Israeli Embassy in Giza in response to calls by internet and political activists to encourage a renewed uprising against what they call Israeli occupation.
