Salafi youth association to attend Friday protest

A Salafi youth organization announced in a statement Wednesday it would participate in protests scheduled for 8 July in Tahrir Square.

The Salafi Daawa Youth Association's statement called on all political factions to participate, but warned them against voicing political or private demands.

Various groups have joined previous calls for a mass protest on 8 July following clashes in the square on 28 and 29 June between police and protesters, among whom were families of protesters killed in the revolution.

The group is joining the protest over a lack of government transparency and the slow prosecution of former President Hosni Mubarak, his family and officials, according to the statement.

It also said the government has not followed through with purging media outlets and security institutions of officials who served under the deposed president.

To avoid conflicts, demonstrators should not use Friday's protests as a platform for demanding a new constitution before parliamentary elections, the group said.

The Salafi youth group also said it wants to restore the 25 January revolution to its right path and mark the end of an era of injustice and corruption.

The statement criticized what it described as negligence in securing rights for families of protesters killed during the revolution, as well as reported efforts to coerce the families to accept compensation in exchange for dropping charges against police and officials accused of murder.
