The suspects involved in the armed kidnapping of a woman in Sheikh Zayed could face the death penalty if convicted, prominent Cassation and Supreme Constitutional Court attorney Amr Abdel Salam stated.
Abdel Salam explained that the legal framework governing the case falls under Article 290 of Egyptian Penal Code No. 58 of 1937, as amended by Law No. 5 of 2018. Under standard provisions, abduction through coercion or fraud carries a minimum rigorous imprisonment sentence of 10 years.
Escalating statutory penalties
The severity of the punishment increases based on specific aggravating circumstances:
Ransom demands: Abductions involving a ransom carry 15 to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Targeting women or minors: If the victim is a woman or a child, the penalty automatically escalates to life imprisonment.
Compounded offenses: Capital punishment (the death penalty) applies if the abduction is linked with sexual assault or rape.
Abdel Salam stressed that final legal classifications and sentencing will depend entirely on the Public Prosecution’s ongoing investigation and evidence gathering.
He also commended law enforcement agencies for apprehending the suspects within 48 hours after video footage documenting the incident surfaced online, highlighting the Interior Ministry’s rapid response in maintaining public safety and deterrence.
