Socialist MP announces presidential bid

Socialist Popular Alliance Party MP Abul Ezz al-Hariry announced on Tuesday he plans to run for president in the upcoming election.

During an interview on “Studio al-Qahira” talk show aired by Saudi satellite channel Al-Arabiya, Hariry said as president he would stop gas exports to Israel.

Hariry described the gas deal signed between Egypt and Israel as “corrupt,” saying the export price set was lower than the international standard, which he claims means Egypt can breach the contract.

The Socialist Popular Alliance Party had earlier proposed Hariry as a consensus candidate.

Hariry said revolution forces need to hold discussions to agree on the next president. He said he would be committed to the candidate political forces agree upon.

In a meeting on Saturday, the party’s secretariat said progressive and socialist forces need to back one candidate to propose a political platform that prioritizes social justice and freedoms.

The party said it will seek agreement on one candidate to increase the chances of winning, adding that consensus would be based on a platform that benefits people and meets their needs.
