Trade union elections to be held this year

Trade union elections will be held at the end of this year as scheduled, the Egyptian Federation of Trade Unions (EFTU) said Wednesday.

Before former President Hosni Mubarak was ousted, the federation in October postponed elections to mobilize workers to vote in the presidential election scheduled for September 2011.

Ahmed Atef, vice president of the federation, said in a statement that the election will be supervised by the judiciary, and its three phases will conclude on 28 November.

The formerly-ruling National Democratic Party often used the EFTU as a tool to mobilize votes for Mubarak.
