Employees and media professionals at the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) expressed relief at Prime Minister Essam Sharaf’s decision to accept the resignation of Sami Sherif, former president of the ERTU.
Sherif left the TV building on Monday amid tight security after he was notified that Sharaf accepted his resignation.
Protesting employees, some of whom have protested for four months, chanted slogans such as "The media and the army are one hand" and "The people want to purify the media."
They called for purging the media of corrupt figures and restoring Egypt's leadership role in the Arab world. They said they had agreed to continue protesting until Sherif left.
After the 25 January revolution, employees became increasingly frustrated with state television policies, which they said remained unchanged.
The protesters accused the management of being slow to make decisions about revamping the media and reviewing salaries.
