The Egyptian Agriculture Export Council says it is expecting an increase in exports of vegetables to the European market in light of the outbreak of E. coli bacteria in the European Union.
“We expect exports of LE5 billion this year as opposed to LE3 billion last year,” said council Chairman Sherif al-Beltagy, explaining that Europe is the largest importer of Egyptian vegetables and fruits, followed by the Arab countries and southeast Asia.
Beltagy also said the local market would not be affected by such an increase. “We export a surplus after meeting local market demands,” he pointed out.
